Micro and Macro Universe of Paper Art

2024.10.19.Sat.

- 2025.01.13.Mon.

Paper is the most familiar yet ‘god-like’ material with infinite possibilities of form.
Paper has also been a “yorishiro” (object representative of a divine spirit) for deities to whom people have entrusted various thoughts and feelings since ancient times.

This exhibition presents the world of works by three female artists, Tomoko Fuse, Noriko Ambe, and Ayumi Shibata, who explore different approaches to paper, such as “origami,” “sculpture,” and “paper cutting,” using creative techniques that overturn the conventional image of paper.

Highlights

”MUKU-MUKU and NEJI-NEJI" 2024Keizo Kioku

Tomoko Fuse is a pioneer of “origami art” that no one has ever seen before. She is a world-renowned origami artist who has changed the concept of origami, including “Unit-fold” and “Mugen-fold.” In this exhibition, you will see the mysterious and dynamic world of expression that can only be created with “origami,” which was born from Fuse's desire to fold three-dimensional objects flat.

"White Night" collaborated with Taira Ichikawa-2024Keizo Kioku

Noriko Ambe is an artist who has been exploring the possibilities of sculptural expression with paper by cutting and layering hundreds or thousands of sheets of paper one by one freehand. Her new work, “White Night,” was created while reexamining the relationship between humans, nature, and time in the Japanese archipelago, which has been hit by one natural disaster after another. It is a new development of Abe's “Geological Strata Series” (1991-).

"Poem of Life"2024Keizo Kioku

Ayumi Shibata is an up-and-coming artist who, with her overwhelmingly superb technique and shades of light, has developed a freely shifting world of works that range from palm-sized to large works that seem to encompass the entire being. In “Poem of Life,” which descends into the 9-meter atrium of the museum, all forms of life are cut out as countless pieces of paper and tied together, expressing Shibata's desire for a world in which all things are in harmony.
